On April 27, 2011, an EF4 tornado, with winds up to 190 miles per hour, ripped through Tuscaloosa County, devastating the towns of Tuscaloosa, Concord, and multiple Birmingham suburbs, as well as wreaking havoc in Birmingham itself. 43 people were killed in Tuscaloosa alone, with over 1,000 injured and over 7,000 homes destroyed. President Obama visited two days later and declared a state of emergency, stating that he had "never seen devastation like this."
In the days since, Habitat has been working diligently to rebuild homes for families left homeless by the tornado and, by doing so, restore hope and stability to the community.
